About MII files

The .mii file is a proprietary save file used by the Nintendo Wii, Wii U, and 3DS to store custom avatar data. It contains a very small binary payload (typically 74 bytes on the original Wii) that acts as a blueprint. It records the character's name, creator ID, gender, skin tone, and the exact coordinates and IDs for facial features like hair, eyes, and nose. Originally created in the Mii Channel, users typically handle these files when transferring characters via SD cards or Wiimotes.

The main disadvantage of a .mii file is that it is strictly an instruction set, not an actual visual asset. It contains absolutely no 2D pixels or 3D geometry. Because the actual 3D rendering assets live securely on the console's firmware, the file is completely unreadable by standard image viewers or 3D modeling software like Blender. If you attempt to open it on a PC natively, you will only see raw hexadecimal code.

To share your avatar on social media or use it in other software, you must convert the .mii instructions into rasterized image formats like PNG or JPG. Advanced community rendering tools can also export the data into 3D meshes like OBJ or DAE by matching the file's ID data against extracted Nintendo assets.

Standard online converters fail to process .mii files because they lack the proprietary facial asset library required to "draw" the character.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MII file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MIIC, MIIGX, CHARINFO, CFSD, FFSD, PNG, BIN, TXT, JPG, DAT, ZIP, SZS and KRAW files.

The MII Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MII converter.
