About MGR files
The .mgr file format is a highly fragmented, multi-use extension primarily utilized as an Electrochemical Graph Settings file by BioLogic EC-Lab. Because "MGR" is shorthand for "Manager," dozens of unrelated applications use it to store configuration data. Beyond laboratory software, .mgr files are frequently encountered as proprietary game asset managers in classic titles like Grand Theft Auto 3, Max Payne, and Mat Hoffman's Pro BMX by Rockstar Games. They are also used as video index files on Panasonic DVRs and project files in the PILAR Risk Analysis Tool.
The major disadvantage of .mgr files is this severe lack of standardization. A generic file extension gives no clues about the internal data structure. An EC-Lab .mgr file is just structured XML, meaning it is entirely text-based. However, a game asset .mgr is a compiled binary archive containing 3D models or animation references. Furthermore, a Panasonic DVR .mgr file is heavily restricted system data, not a playable video file. This fragmentation makes opening them natively extremely frustrating, as you must guess which software created them. You cannot simply double-click an .mgr file and expect your computer to handle it correctly.
For data extraction and editing, EC-Lab and text-based .mgr files should be converted to XML, CSV, or TXT to allow parsing in standard spreadsheet software or programming environments. For proprietary game assets, specialized modding tools are required to extract raw models into OBJ or FBX formats. The MGR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MGR converter.
