About MF4 files

The .mf4 file is an ASAM Measurement Data Format version 4 (MDF4) file, the industry standard for storing automotive measurement data. Engineers use it to log terabytes of signal data from ECUs, CAN buses, LIN, and FlexRay networks during test drives. Unlike simple text files, .mf4 uses a highly efficient binary structure that supports compression and file sizes well beyond the 4GB limit of its predecessor, MDF.

However, this efficiency creates a major barrier: .mf4 files are not human-readable. You cannot open them in a text editor or directly in Microsoft Excel. To interpret the raw binary data (often just hexadecimal strings), you typically need a corresponding DBC database file to decode the signals into physical values (like 'Engine Speed' or 'Oil Temperature'). Furthermore, native access usually requires expensive proprietary software licenses like Vector CANape or ETAS INCA.

For most users, the practical solution is conversion. For quick analysis or sharing with non-engineers, convert .mf4 to CSV to view the data in Excel. For complex engineering analysis, convert to MAT for use in MATLAB. For big data analytics and cloud storage, converting to .Parquet or HDF5 preserves the hierarchical structure while remaining accessible to data science tools.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MF4 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MF4U, BLF, M4A, CSV, MDF, ZIP, POD, MP4, BPMN, SNAGX, IPT, RFA and JNLP files.

The MF4 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MF4 converter.
