About MENC files

A .menc file typically indicates that your data has been encrypted, most frequently by the MegaCortex ransomware. In a much smaller percentage of legacy cases, it represents a Windows Mobile Encrypted File created by Microsoft.

There is no standard consumer software designed to legitimately "open" a MegaCortex file. You must use specialized decryption tools provided by cybersecurity vendors, if a public key has been recovered. For legacy Windows Mobile files, they can only be opened on the exact physical device that encrypted them.

Users desperately seek to convert these files to recover their original documents, images, or databases. The overwhelming disadvantage of the .menc format is that it is essentially a hostage situation. The files are locked using military-grade encryption (such as AES or RSA), meaning that the underlying data is completely unreadable. Standard file converters cannot simply "save as" a new format because they cannot bypass the cryptographic lock. Furthermore, legacy mobile encryption ties the file to a unique hardware key, meaning moving the SD card to a new phone leaves the files permanently inaccessible.

The ultimate goal is to revert these files to their original extensions (like DOCX, JPG, or PDF), but traditional conversion targets do not apply here. You are not converting the file; you are decrypting it. Once unlocked, the file returns to its original, usable state.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to process because it is a closed, proprietary, and intentionally hostile format. Standard online converters will fail completely because they expect readable file headers, not randomized cipher text. If our analysis detects any unencrypted embedded metadata or underlying original headers, partial identification or viewing may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MENC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MNC, MEC, HTC, JPG, ENC, INDD, PDF, TXT, EXE and BIN files.

The MENC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MENC converter.
