The .mnc file extension is primarily used for the Medical Imaging NetCDF (MINC) format, a specialized container developed by the Montreal Neurological Institute to store complex medical imaging data, such as MRI and PET scans. These files are designed to handle multi-dimensional data (3D and 4D) and extensive metadata, making them invaluable for neuroimaging research. However, this high level of specialization is also their main drawback for general use. .mnc files are essentially unreadable outside of academic environments; they cannot be opened by standard photo viewers or even general healthcare software without specific plugins. Furthermore, users frequently experience issues due to version discrepancies between the older MINC1 (based on NetCDF) and the modern MINC2 (based on HDF5), which can lead to cryptic "unsupported format" errors in legacy tools.

In rare legacy cases, an .mnc file might be a compiled menu file from older versions of AutoCAD, requiring a totally different text-based conversion approach.
