Convert ANKI to another file type
To convert ANKI decks to another format, you need Anki or other Database software.
Convert a file to ANKI
To convert other file formats to the "Flashcard Database" file type, you need software like Anki or a similar tool.
About ANKI files
The .anki file is a flashcard database primarily used by Anki, a popular open-source program for spaced repetition learning. These files store text, HTML formatting, and deck settings. You can learn more about the software on its Wikipedia page.
The main disadvantage of the .anki format is its rigid reliance on the Anki ecosystem. It is essentially an older SQLite database file. You cannot open it natively in web browsers, standard text editors, or mobile devices without installing specific software. Furthermore, modern Anki versions have largely replaced this format with the packaged apkg format, making raw .anki files somewhat obsolete and harder to share. Sharing an .anki file with a classmate who does not have the software will leave them completely unable to view the study material.
To make the data accessible, you often need to convert it. Converting .anki to CSV or TXT is highly recommended if you want to import flashcards into Microsoft Excel, Notion, or Quizlet. Note that converting to a spreadsheet or text format will permanently strip away the spaced repetition scheduling data and any embedded HTML formatting.
This file format is notoriously difficult for generic online tools to convert because it is not a standard document; it is a structured relational database. Often, only the original Anki software can correctly parse the tables and export the cards. Since our analysis engine can detect the underlying SQL structure, extracting the raw text content may still be possible even if you do not have Anki installed.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ANKI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert ANKI file to PDF, CSV, NOTES, APKG, TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX or LATEX, you can use Anki or similar software from the "Spaced Repetition Flashcard Deck" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to ANKI, try Anki or another comparable tool in the "Spaced Repetition Flashcard Deck" category.
The ANKI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ANKI converter.
