In a developer context, .MCL files serve as Compiled Library files for MikroElektronika compiler suites or as Microchip C Linker files in MPLAB XC8. It is also occasionally used as a game world map data file in MMORPGs like Cabal Online or MapleStory.
The primary disadvantage of an .MCL file is its extremely narrow application. A Pag-IBIG remittance file is essentially structured data, but its proprietary extension prevents standard spreadsheet applications like Microsoft Excel from opening it by default.
