About MC2 files

The .mc2 file extension is most frequently a MasterCook Cookbook file, serving as the proprietary database container for recipe text in MasterCook software (versions 5 and newer). Unlike modern single-file documents, MasterCook splits data: the .mc2 holds the text (ingredients, directions), while a companion mcx file holds the images.

Users typically need to convert these files because they are proprietary legacy databases. You cannot open an .mc2 file on a smartphone, tablet, or standard text editor. Furthermore, if you separate the .mc2 from its mcx counterpart or rename them in Windows Explorer, the database link breaks, rendering images inaccessible. To share recipes with family or archive them for the future, the best workflow is converting the database to PDF (for printing/viewing), DOCX (for editing), or XML (for importing into other recipe managers).

In the realm of retro gaming, .mc2 also appears as a PlayStation 2 Save Icon or Virtual Memory Card file. These files contain the 3D icon data used by the PS2 browser or emulators like PCSX2 to represent game saves visually. These are often encountered when backing up saves with hardware like the Memcard Pro 2.

Convert.Guru analyzes your MC2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MCX, CR2, BMP, JPG, CRB, BYTES, ROOT, MC3 and PS2 files.

The MC2 Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MC2 converter.
