A .MCX file is most commonly a construction estimate macro used by Xactimate or a 3D CAD/CAM part file created by Mastercam. In Xactimate, the file acts as a shortcut macro containing predefined pricing and line-item data for insurance and restoration estimates. In Mastercam, it stores 3D geometry, milling parameters, and complex CNC machine toolpaths. Less frequently, .MCX files function as geometry caches in Autodesk Maya, cookbook recipes in MasterCook, or 3D project data for Meshmixer and MagicaCSG.
These formats present severe challenges for users. They are highly specialized and proprietary. A Mastercam .MCX file contains closed-source toolpath data that cannot be accessed without an expensive, active software license. Xactimate files are similarly locked into the Verisk ecosystem, meaning they cannot be opened by standard text editors or generic spreadsheet tools. Standard online converters fail to process .MCX files because the data structures are undocumented. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
If you need to share a Mastercam design, the best approach is to export the file natively to standard formats like STEP, IGES, or STL.
