About LSN files

The .LSN file extension represents a diverse set of proprietary data formats, most notably serving as the digital license key for Tally.ERP 9 (now TallyPrime). In the context of Tally, this file acts as a security token that activates the accounting software on a specific machine. A major source of friction for users is that .LSN files are not human-readable; attempting to open them in a text editor typically results in garbled binary code. Because these files are machine-locked, users often face issues when migrating data to a new server or recovering a corrupted license, leading them to search for a way to "convert" or read the file.

Outside of the financial sector, .LSN files are often used as Lesson files for educational software like Rosetta Stone or Finale by MakeMusic. These files contain structured curriculum data, audio references, or musical notation settings that are strictly proprietary. You generally cannot convert a lesson file to a standard document format like DOCX or MP3 without the original software acting as an intermediary.

For Tally users, the best "conversion" for archiving is wrapping the file in a ZIP container to prevent corruption during email transfer. If you suspect your file is a TRACE32 report (used in embedded development), the internal structure is often a standard ZIP archive - renaming the extension from .LSN to ZIP may allow you to extract the contents immediately.

Convert.Guru analyzes your LSN file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted LICENSE, QZTP, TTP, MOM, TIMESTAMP and HEX files.

The LSN Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LSN converter.
