About LPU files

The .LPU extension primarily refers to a Passolo Language Pack Update, a specialized format used by Trados Passolo (formerly SDL Passolo) for visual software localization. These files are typically generated by project managers to bundle specific string lists or updates for translators, separating them from the main project file (LPK or LPP).

The primary problem with .LPU files is their proprietary nature; they are designed to be opened strictly within the Trados ecosystem. Translators without a licensed copy of Passolo often struggle to view or edit the contained strings, and the format does not natively support opening in standard text editors or spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel. This "black box" structure makes it difficult to perform quick edits, word counts, or alignment checks outside the specific tool version they were created in.

For a smaller subset of users, an .LPU file may be a PLC Compiled Project Archive generated by Axel LogicLab. In this context, the file is often a standard GZIP compressed archive containing compiled logic for programmable logic controllers.

Conversion Best Practices:

For Translation/Editing: Convert Passolo .LPU files to XLIFF (the open industry standard for translation data), CSV, or XLSX. This allows strings to be edited in generic CAT tools or spreadsheets.
For Archiving/Viewing: Convert to TXT or PDF to create a static reference of the strings without requiring the localization environment.
For Axel PLC Files: Since these are often renamed archives, converting (or renaming) to GZ or ZIP typically allows you to extract the raw project data.
