The .LMS extension is a container for several distinct, unrelated formats, creating frequent confusion for users. The most common variation (approx. 44%) is a project file from the now-discontinued LEGO Mindstorms Robot Inventor app (set 51515). These files are technically ZIP archives containing Python (PY) or Scratch-based (SB3) code, assets, and a manifest. The catch is that once the official app is no longer supported on your OS, your robot's logic is locked away. To retrieve your code without the app, the best workaround is renaming the file extension from .LMS to ZIP and extracting the contents.
Another significant user base (approx. 6%) deals with .LMS files from Light-O-Rama, used to choreograph holiday light shows. These are XML-based text files that define lighting timing and intensity, not audio files. Users often mistakenly try to convert these to MP3 or MP4, but the file contains no sound - only the instructions for the lights. For viewing or editing the raw sequence data, converting to TXT or XML is the practical solution.
