The .LIVP file is a proprietary container format created by Apple to store Live Photos. It is essentially an archive that packages a high-resolution still image and a 3-second video clip together. Users typically generate these files when taking photos on iOS devices using the Live Photo feature, and they often appear when transferring files from an iPhone to a computer or a third-party cloud service.
The main disadvantage of the .LIVP format is its lack of cross-platform compatibility. It is entirely proprietary and not supported by web browsers, Android devices, or native Windows image viewers. If you send a .LIVP file to a non-Apple user, they will not be able to open it without specialized software or manual workarounds.
To share these files reliably, you must extract or convert the contents into standard targets. The best approach is to separate the container into a JPG or HEIC file for the still image, and an MP4 or MOV file for the video. Be aware that converting the file into a single static image format will permanently discard the embedded video and animation data.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard image viewers cannot parse the dual-media container. Often, only the original Apple Photos software can properly read or export the combined data.
