About LIF files
The .LIF (Leica Image File) format is a proprietary container used by Leica Microsystems microscopes to store complex, multi-dimensional biological datasets. Unlike a standard JPG, a single .LIF file often acts as a database containing dozens of separate images, including multi-channel fluorescence, Z-stacks (3D depth), and time-lapse recordings.
Users typically encounter significant friction because these files can exceed several gigabytes and cannot be opened by standard operating system viewers, web browsers, or office software like Microsoft Word. To view or publish these images, they must be converted. For scientific analysis, converting to .OME-TIFF is critical to preserve metadata (scale bars, acquisition timestamps). For general sharing, presentations, or print, converting specific image series to TIFF, PNG, or JPG is the standard workflow.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your LIF file.
If you want to convert LIF file to WEBP, CUR or PSB, you can use Leica Application Suite X or similar software from the "Microscopy Image Data Container" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to LIF, try Leica Application Suite X or another comparable tool in the "Microscopy Image Data Container" category.
The LIF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LIF converter.
