About LFM files

The .LFM file extension is heavily fragmented and used by several completely different software applications. Its most common use is as a Lazarus Form Definition file for the Lazarus IDE, where it stores the layout of graphical user interfaces. It is also used as a proprietary 3D laser scan point cloud file by Leica Cyclone, a label design project file by Labeljoy, and a geological 3D model file by Leapfrog Geo.

Because .LFM serves multiple distinct purposes, it is a notoriously difficult format to manage. The primary disadvantage of this format is its strict reliance on the original software. A Leica Cyclone .LFM point cloud is a closed format that requires an expensive software license to view and cannot be opened natively in standard CAD tools. Similarly, Labeljoy files are essentially proprietary configurations wrapped in ZIP compression, while Leapfrog models use hidden XML structures. None of these variations are supported by standard web browsers, making sharing and quick viewing impossible.

Standard online converters usually fail to process .LFM files because they rely on the file extension rather than the internal file signature. For Lazarus files, conversion to standard TXT or XML is ideal for code review. For Labeljoy files, exporting to PDF or JPG is necessary for printing. Leica point clouds typically must be exported to standard LAS, PTS, or XYZ formats using the original software to retain spatial integrity. Our analyzer will detect if the .LFM is hiding a standard ZIP, XML, or plain-text architecture, giving you a realistic path forward to extract your data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your LFM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted IFM, LPI, LPR, OFM and CFM files.

The LFM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our LFM converter.
