About LFM files

The .lfm extension is a fragmented format used by three distinct industries, creating significant confusion for users trying to open one.

  1. Lazarus Form File (Developer): The most common variant is a text-based GUI definition used by the Lazarus IDE. It describes the layout of buttons, windows, and labels in a Free Pascal application. While these are technically plain text, they are often unrecognized by standard editors, requiring you to manually associate them or install a heavy IDE just to view code.
  2. Leica Cyclone Scene (3D/CAD): In surveying and engineering, an .lfm file acts as a pointer or metadata file within the Leica Cyclone ecosystem. These files reference massive laser scan datasets. Users often struggle here because the .lfm file alone does not contain the 3D points - it links to a database. You cannot simply "open" this in AutoCAD without the connected project folders.
  3. Label Designs (CAS/Labeljoy): Various labeling software, including Labeljoy and CAS, use .lfm for saving proprietary sticker layouts. These are strictly locked to their parent software and cannot be edited elsewhere.
