Convert KTX2 to another file type
To convert KTX2 textures to another format, you need KTX-Software or other Raster Image software.
Convert a file to KTX2
To convert other file formats to the "GPU Compressed Texture" file type, you need software like KTX-Software or a similar tool.
About KTX2 files
The .ktx2 format is a GPU texture container created by The Khronos Group. It is primarily used to store highly optimized image data, including mipmaps, cubemaps, and array textures, directly readable by modern graphics APIs like Vulkan, OpenGL, and WebGL. You can manipulate these files using official command-line tools like toktx from the KTX-Software suite, or within 3D authoring environments that support glTF models. The main disadvantage of .ktx2 is its extreme specialization. Standard image editors like Adobe Photoshop and default operating system viewers cannot open these files natively. The format utilizes Basis Universal supercompression (such as ETC1S or UASTC), which makes the files incredibly small and VRAM-efficient for GPUs, but essentially locked away from everyday human use. Users usually need to convert .ktx2 to PNG, JPG, or WEBP to actually see the textures or share them with non-developers. However, converting to a standard 2D raster format means losing all the hardware-specific optimizations and mipmap layers. Because .ktx2 relies on complex hardware-level compression, standard online converters usually fail to process it. If our analysis detects a supported underlying pixel format, viewing or extracting the base image is still possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your KTX2 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert KTX2 file to PNG, DDS, JPG, PDF, GIF, BMP, TIFF, TIF, WEBP, ICO, CUR or PSD, you can use KTX-Software or similar software from the "GPU Texture Container" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert RAW, PNG, AI, NEF, PSB, DNG, SVG, GIF, EPS, JPG, ARW or PDF files to KTX2, try KTX-Software or another comparable tool in the "GPU Texture Container" category.
The KTX2 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KTX2 converter.
