About JTL files

The .JTL file is a performance test results log generated by Apache JMeter, a popular open-source load testing tool. It records raw metrics such as timestamps, response times, HTTP status codes, latency, and error messages from test runs. Users primarily view these files using JMeter's built-in Listeners, but the data is inherently tabular or hierarchical. You can read more about JMeter on Wikipedia. The primary disadvantage of the .JTL format is its potential for massive file sizes and poor readability outside of JMeter. Under the hood, a .JTL file is usually just a CSV or XML file. However, standard spreadsheet applications do not recognize the .JTL extension. Furthermore, if JMeter is configured to log full request and response payloads in XML format, a single load test can generate a file exceeding 10GB, which will instantly crash standard text editors like Notepad. You often need to convert .JTL files to standard CSV or XLSX for data analysis, or to HTML for sharing graphical dashboards with stakeholders. Converting an XML-based JTL to a flat CSV will result in the loss of deep payload data, but it drastically reduces file size. Standard online converters frequently fail to process .JTL files because the internal column schema is not fixed; it depends entirely on the user's custom JMeter properties. If our analysis detects a supported underlying CSV or XML structure, viewing or conversion to standard tabular formats may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your JTL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JLT, JMX, ZIP, TXT, XML, TSX, ICS, SMCL, VBO, JOURNAL and CSV files.

The JTL Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JTL converter.
