About JNP files
A .jnp file is an XML-based instruction file used by the deprecated Java Network Launching Protocol (JNLP) to download and run Java applications over the internet. Originally deployed via Oracle Java Web Start, these files act as web-based shortcuts that point to remote JAR files. Today, .jnp files present a major compatibility challenge. Oracle officially deprecated Java Web Start in Java 9, meaning modern browsers and operating systems completely block these files. Attempting to open one usually results in a 'Cannot open this file type' error unless you install outdated, potentially insecure legacy software or third-party workarounds like OpenWebStart. Furthermore, running an unknown .jnp file is a massive security risk, as it forces your computer to download and execute remote code. Instead of trying to run it, the safest approach is to view the underlying code. You should convert your .jnp file to standard text formats like XML, TXT, or PDF. This allows you to safely read the server URLs and execution parameters without triggering any downloads. Because .jnp is an obscure three-letter alternative to the standard JNLP format, most standard online converters fail to recognize it. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your JNP file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert JNP file to JPG, TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX, MD, MARKDOWN or LOG, you can use Oracle Java Web Start or similar software from the "Java Applet Launching Configuration" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to JNP, try Oracle Java Web Start or another comparable tool in the "Java Applet Launching Configuration" category.
The JNP Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our JNP converter.
