About JLS files

A .JLS file typically contains a digital image compressed using the JPEG-LS standard (ISO/IEC 14495-1). Unlike the ubiquitous standard JPEG, which relies on discrete cosine transform (DCT) for lossy compression, JPEG-LS uses a predictive scheme to achieve superior lossless and near-lossless compression ratios. This makes it particularly valuable in industries requiring pixel-perfect accuracy, such as medical imaging (often encapsulated within DCM DICOM files) and aerospace remote sensing.

However, the specialized nature of JPEG-LS creates significant compatibility hurdles. Standard operating system viewers (like Windows Photos or macOS Preview) and web browsers do not natively support .JLS files. Users often encounter error messages when trying to open these files outside of specialized medical or scientific software. Additionally, the lack of widespread library support means sharing these files with clients or colleagues usually fails.
