About IWC files

The .iwc extension refers to two completely different proprietary formats, creating significant confusion for users.

1. ImageWare ID Card Project (Most Common):
Associated with ImageWare Systems (often the CardWizard or CardPresso software), this file stores identity management data. It acts as a blueprint for employee badges, containing layout templates, placeholder text, linked photographs, and magnetic stripe encoding data.
The Problem: These are not simple image files. You cannot open them in Photoshop or Paint. They are database-driven project files that often require a licensed dongle or specific software version to render the final badge.
Best Conversion: If you have access to the software, the only reliable conversion is to "Print to PDF" or export card records to CSV. Without the software, the file is effectively locked.

2. InfoWorks Compact Transportable Database:
Used by Innovyze InfoWorks ICM (now part of Autodesk), this is a hydraulic modeling file used by civil engineers to simulate storm, sewer, and flood water systems.
The Problem: These files contain complex geospatial and mathematical model data. Opening them requires an expensive engineering license.
The Workaround: These files are internally compressed ZIP archives. By renaming the extension from .iwc to zip, you can often extract the internal XML data and asset files without needing the host software. This allows you to inspect the raw data or convert tables to CSV manually.

The IWC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IWC converter.
