About BMPR files
The .bmpr file is a proprietary project format created by Balsamiq, used primarily for user interface wireframing and mockup design. Introduced in Balsamiq Mockups 3, it consolidated the older multi-file bmml format into a single container.
These files store interface layouts, custom symbols, project settings, and embedded image assets. The main disadvantage of the .bmpr format is its proprietary, locked-in nature. You cannot open it natively in web browsers, vector editors, or standard image viewers. Collaborating with clients or developers who do not have a paid Balsamiq license is frustrating, requiring you to manually export the files.
Converting .bmpr to PDF, PNG, or JPG is the best way to share static wireframes with stakeholders. However, standard online converters consistently fail with these files. Under the hood, a .bmpr file is actually an SQLite database containing JSON strings and binary blobs, not a standard graphic document. This makes it exceptionally difficult to parse without the proprietary Balsamiq rendering engine.
Because it is a closed format, you typically need the original software to properly read or export the visual data. While recreating the exact visual wireframe might require the original app, our analysis tools can detect the underlying SQLite structure, allowing you to extract embedded image assets or recover raw text data from the database.
Convert.Guru analyzes your BMPR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The BMPR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our BMPR converter.
