About IFL files

An .IFL (Image File List) is a plain text file used by Autodesk 3ds Max to sequence multiple static images (like JPG, PNG, or TGA) into an animation. It is commonly used for rendering video frames or applying animated textures to 3D materials.

You can open and edit an .IFL file with any standard text editor, such as Notepad++ or Microsoft Notepad. The format is also supported by historical image software like ImageForge.

A major limitation of the .IFL format is that it contains no actual image data. It only holds text references and file paths to external images. If you move, rename, or delete the source images, the .IFL file breaks instantly. Furthermore, you cannot upload an .IFL file to social media or play it in standard media players like VLC.

To share or view an image sequence, you must convert the referenced frames into a compiled video format. For web playback, convert the sequence to MP4 (H.264). For simple looping web animations, convert to GIF. For archiving lossless video, convert to MOV.
