About IFL files

An .IFL (Image File List) is not a video file itself, but a simple ASCII text file used primarily by Autodesk 3ds Max to create animations from a sequence of still images (e.g., frame001.jpg, frame002.jpg). Think of it as a playlist or a script: it tells the software which image to display for each frame of a rendering.

Because an .IFL file only contains file paths and not the actual image data, it is typically only a few kilobytes in size. Practical friction arises when users try to "play" an .IFL file in media players like VLC or Windows Media Player, which will fail because they cannot interpret the text list as a video stream. Additionally, if the source images are moved, renamed, or deleted, the .IFL file becomes useless ("broken links").

To "convert" an .IFL, you are typically looking to compile the referenced image sequence into a standalone video file like MP4, AVI, or MOV for web use or playback. For archiving or editing the sequence order, the file can be opened and modified in any standard text editor like Notepad++.
