About IBL files
The .IBL file extension primarily represents an IIS Binary Log file used by Microsoft IIS to record web server activity in a raw, unformatted binary state. A secondary common use is the Image-Based Lighting preset file, popularized by tools like HDR Labs Smart IBL and Adobe Photoshop, which stores 3D lighting environment data and rig settings. In specialized engineering fields, it also functions as a geometry curve file for ANSYS ICEM CFD or Dassault Systèmes ICEM Surf.
Users frequently need to convert .IBL files because raw IIS binary logs are practically unreadable to humans and standard text editors. They lack the structure of standard W3C extended log formats and require specific Microsoft parsing tools to extract traffic metrics, error codes, and request details. Similarly, Image-Based Lighting presets are tightly bound to specific 3D rendering pipelines and often require conversion to standard High Dynamic Range formats to be useful across different software.
For IIS logs, the ideal conversion targets are standard comma-separated CSV or plain text TXT files to allow analysis in Microsoft Excel or database ingestion. For lighting presets, converting to HDR or EXR is recommended, though custom preset metadata - like sun position or camera rig settings - may be lost during translation.
These files are notoriously difficult to open or convert with generic tools. IIS logs are closed, proprietary binary streams, while CAD and 3D IBL variants contain specialized coordinate data. Standard online converters fail because they cannot interpret these proprietary binary schemas. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your IBL file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert IBL file to , you can use Microsoft IIS or similar software from the "Web Server Log Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The IBL Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our IBL converter.
