The .HPS file extension is heavily fragmented, primarily functioning as a game save file for Hobo: Tough Life, a 3D dental model for the 3Shape Dental System, or a sequenced game audio file for Sega and Nintendo GameCube games. It is also used as an HPL Engine script file by Frictional Games and as a Hierarchical Petri net model.
The main disadvantage of .HPS files is their deeply proprietary and context-dependent nature. Because the same extension is shared across fundamentally different industries (dentistry, video games, mathematics), standard online converters almost always fail. A generic converter expecting a game audio file will immediately crash if fed a 3Shape 3D dental model. Furthermore, files like the 3Shape .HPS models are part of a closed medical ecosystem, meaning they require expensive, specialized software to open natively and cannot be previewed in standard operating systems.
Converting .HPS files depends entirely on their origin. For 3Shape dental models, you typically need to use the original 3Shape Dental System to export the data to universal 3D printing formats like STL or OBJ. Game audio .HPS files (like those from the Yakuza series) contain sequenced sound banks rather than flat audio, requiring specialized extraction tools (like HPSJam) to convert the tracks to standard WAV or MP3 files. HPL Engine scripts, however, are plain text and can easily be saved as TXT or CS.
