About HIV files

The .HIV file extension primarily denotes a Windows Registry Hive file. These files store hierarchical databases of settings, preferences, user profiles, and hardware configurations for the Microsoft Windows operating system. Open-source utilities like Regshot also rely on .HIV files to save snapshots of the registry, which are used to compare system changes before and after installing software.

Because these files are proprietary, binary system databases, they are heavily restricted. Users typically need to extract or convert them to troubleshoot system crashes, analyze malware behavior, or recover configuration settings from a dead hard drive. The core disadvantage of the .HIV format is its rigid structure; it is locked by the operating system while running and cannot be parsed by standard text editors. Without specialized software, the data is entirely inaccessible.

To analyze the contained data, you must convert .HIV into REG (a human-readable registry text format) or export the keys to TXT and CSV for auditing. During this extraction, the native binary structure is lost, but you gain fully readable text that can be searched or compared.

Standard online converters fail to process .HIV files because they are complex, closed databases rather than standard media or documents. Often, only the original Registry Editor or specialized forensic tools can properly read or export the data. We will identify the format, inspect the binary payload, and attempt to show extracted text or internal strings. If our analysis detects supported underlying data, partial viewing or extraction may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your HIV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted MP4, DAT, AVI, ZIP, HEIC, PML, HIF, TXT, MOV, PCAPNG, SOFTWARE and DEFAULT files.

The HIV Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our HIV converter.
