About GSV files
The .GSV extension typically represents a GameShark Save File, a proprietary format generated by cheat devices like the GameShark or Action Replay for consoles such as the Game Boy Advance (GBA) or PlayStation 2. Unlike standard raw save files (ST., SAV), .GSV files act as 'snapshot' states or compressed containers that modern emulators like mGBA and PCSX2 cannot natively read. This format lock-in prevents gamers from transferring progress between original hardware, cheat cartridges, and PC emulation. To use these saves on a flash cart (like EverDrive) or a standard emulator, you generally need to convert the .GSV container into a raw binary format (SAV).
A secondary but growing use case is within the Godot Engine, where .GSV files function as JSON-formatted save data for games like Grime. In this context, the file is simply a text-based data structure that can be opened with any code editor, though it may be obfuscated or Base64 encoded. Less commonly, .GSV files store board game data for GnuGo or replay data for Warcraft III via the Garena platform. For preservation, converting legacy game saves to raw binary or open text formats is critical to ensure long-term accessibility.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GSV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GSV file to SHP, KML, KMZ, GPX, GEOJSON, TOPOJSON, TIF, TIFF, ECW, SID, IMG or DEM, you can use VisualBoyAdvance or similar software from the "Game Save State" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert LAZ, KMZ, DTM, CSV, DEM, PRJ, LAS, GPX, DSM, SHP, DBF or KML files to GSV, try VisualBoyAdvance or another comparable tool in the "Game Save State" category.
The GSV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GSV converter.
