About GR files
The .GR file extension primarily stores either a PCB Boardview diagnostic file used by electronics repair technicians or Mathematical Graph Data such as DIMACS shortest path graphs and ISPD routing benchmarks. Boardview files map the components, traces, and test points of a printed circuit board. Graph data files store nodes and edges for routing algorithms. Other completely unrelated uses include PVR video recordings from Enigma2 satellite receivers, saved MHTML web archives, and Graphite CAD drawings. The main disadvantage of the .GR format is its extreme fragmentation. Because dozens of different applications use the exact same file extension, operating systems cannot reliably associate the file with the correct software. Users are often forced to guess whether the file requires a repair tool like BoardViewer, mathematical rendering tools like Graphviz, or a video player. Attempting to open a binary .GR video or PCB file in a standard text editor will display garbled characters and may crash the software. To eliminate these compatibility roadblocks, conversion is highly recommended. For sharing PCB layouts or mathematical graph visuals, convert the output to PDF or PNG for universal viewing. If the file is a text-based routing graph, convert the raw data to CSV or JSON for processing in modern data pipelines. If it is an Enigma2 TV recording, convert it to MP4 for seamless playback on mobile devices.
