About GPH files

The .GPH file format is primarily used by Stata, a commercial statistical software package, to store generated graphs, plots, and charts. It is also utilized by Quantum Design MultiVu for measurement system graphs and by IBM Rational Software Architect for XML-based web application diagrams. These files typically contain the coordinates, styling commands, and summary data required to render complex visual representations of datasets.

Sharing .GPH files is a massive bottleneck for collaboration. Because the Stata variant is a closed, proprietary binary format, files cannot be opened natively by web browsers, standard image viewers, or document editors like Microsoft Word. Colleagues receiving a .GPH file without an active, expensive Stata license are essentially locked out of the visualization.

To make these graphs usable, you must convert them to standard vector formats like SVG or EPS for high-resolution academic publishing, or raster formats like PNG and JPG for web use. While converting resolves accessibility issues, the interactive ability to re-apply Stata visual themes to the graph is permanently lost.

Because this file format is proprietary and strictly controlled by the original software, it is extremely difficult to open or convert outside of its native ecosystem. Standard online converters will almost always fail to parse the undocumented rules of a Stata graph.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GPH file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted DTA, PNG, SMCL, JPG, TSX, XLSX, SAV, NBIB, FDF, CMBL, XPT, NPY and BIB files.

The GPH Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GPH converter.
