About FDF files
An .FDF (Forms Data Format) file is a specialized text-based container generated by Adobe Acrobat used to store the values entered into a PDF form, such as text fields, checkboxes, and radio buttons. Unlike a standard PDF, an FDF file does not contain the visual layout, fonts, or graphics of the original document - it only holds the raw input data and a file path reference to the original template. This creates a significant usability barrier: if the original PDF template is missing, moved, or corrupted, opening the .FDF file will result in an error or display unintelligible code rather than a readable document. Additionally, most non-Adobe PDF viewers and web browsers cannot natively render FDF files, leaving users unable to view the form content contextually. To resolve these compatibility and viewing issues, users should convert FDF files based on their specific needs:
For Viewing & Archiving: Convert to PDF. This process merges the raw data back into a visual document structure, creating a flattened, portable file that can be opened on any device.
For Data Analysis: Convert to CSV or XLSX. This extracts the form inputs into a structured spreadsheet, allowing for sorting, filtering, and importing into databases like Microsoft Excel.
For Troubleshooting: Convert to TXT to inspect the raw key-value pairs without needing specialized software.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FDF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FDF file to PDF, TEXT, CSV, TXT, RTF, DOC, DOCX, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX or MD, you can use Adobe Acrobat or similar software from the "PDF Form Data Export" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to FDF, try Adobe Acrobat or another comparable tool in the "PDF Form Data Export" category.
The FDF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FDF converter.
