About GPG files

A .GPG file is an encrypted data file, digital signature, or cryptographic key ring created using the GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG). This open-source software implements the OpenPGP standard to secure emails, files, and server communications. Organizations use .GPG files to transmit sensitive information securely over the internet. To open or extract a .GPG file locally, you need GnuPG installed on your system, or a compatible graphical interface like Kleopatra or Gpg4win. The main disadvantage of the .GPG format is its strict access control. You cannot open, read, or convert these files without the correct private key or passphrase. Standard online converters always fail to process .GPG files because the data is mathematically scrambled. The files are entirely unreadable to web browsers and basic text editors. Your best target format is simply the original file format hidden inside the encryption container. Once decrypted, you might find a .TXT, .CSV, .ZIP, or .TAR file inside. Because this is a secure format, it is extremely difficult to convert directly. Only the original decryption software holding your private key can properly export the data. However, you can use convert.guru. Just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view its structure, and convert it when possible. If our analysis detects an unencrypted key block or a supported underlying format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GPG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted JPG, JPEG, PGP, PDF, PNG, WEBP, TXT, ASC, JFIF, DOCX, DVT, ZIP and HEIC files.

The GPG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GPG converter.
