Convert GPG to another file type
To convert GPG encrypted files to another format, you need GNU Privacy Guard or other Encoded software.
Convert a file to GPG
To convert other file formats to the "OpenPGP Encrypted File" file type, you need software like GNU Privacy Guard or a similar tool.
About GPG files
A .GPG file is an encrypted data file, digital signature, or cryptographic key ring created by GNU Privacy Guard (GnuPG). It uses the OpenPGP standard to secure files through public-key cryptography. These files are typically opened and managed using GnuPG, Kleopatra, or Gpg4win.
The main disadvantage of the .GPG format is its strict access requirements. Because it is an encrypted container, the data is mathematically locked. Users frequently struggle with these files when they lose their private keys or forget their passphrases, rendering the contents permanently inaccessible. Furthermore, sharing a .GPG file requires the recipient to have compatible PGP software installed and the appropriate keys configured. Standard web browsers and built-in operating system tools cannot open these files out of the box.
You cannot "convert" a .GPG file in the traditional sense; instead, you must decrypt it. The ultimate target format depends entirely on the original payload, which could be a TXT document, a ZIP archive, or a PDF file. Once decrypted, you recover the exact original file.
Because this file format is heavily encrypted, it is exceptionally difficult to open or convert online. Standard online converters fail to process it because they lack the necessary private keys and passphrases. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, like an unencrypted ASCII armor wrapper, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GPG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GPG file to PPM, ASC, TEXT, PEM, TMP, TEMP, CACHE, LOG, BAK, OLD, NEW or PART, you can use GNU Privacy Guard or similar software from the "Encrypted Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DEVICE, CACHE, SOCK, SYMLINK, PID, MOUNT, FIFO, LOG, PIPE, TMP, JUNCTION or TEMP files to GPG, try GNU Privacy Guard or another comparable tool in the "Encrypted Data Storage" category.
The GPG Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GPG converter.
