About DVT files

A .DVT file is a proprietary digital video recording created by Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) and Digital Video Recorder (DVR) security systems, most commonly those utilizing Broadcom chipsets. These files store raw security footage captured directly by the camera system.

To open a .DVT file, users typically need the proprietary playback software provided by the hardware manufacturer, such as the DVT Player from Digital Video Technologies. Standard software like VLC Media Player or Windows Media Player will almost always fail to read these files natively.

Users frequently need to convert .DVT files because the format is extremely rigid, isolated, and highly restrictive. It is a closed, proprietary format designed for hardware efficiency and security, not for broad compatibility. You cannot share a .DVT file with law enforcement, insurance companies, or upload it to social media, because standard devices and web browsers cannot read the manufacturer-specific headers.

The best conversion targets are universal video formats like MP4 or AVI. Converting to these formats ensures the video can be played on any smartphone or PC, though you may lose proprietary DVR metadata such as embedded motion-detection triggers or multi-camera timestamps.

This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert because standard online converters fail to process it. They lack the proprietary demuxing algorithms required to strip away the manufacturer-specific headers and encryption. Often, only the original DVR software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format - like a standard H.264 video stream hiding inside the proprietary container - viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your DVT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GPG, MP4, BK2, GLV and XBA files.
