About CEV files
A .CEV file is a proprietary electrical relay event report created by protective relays manufactured by Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL). These files contain critical oscillography data, voltage and current waveforms, and digital logic states recorded during a power system fault or grid event. Engineers rely on these files to analyze relay performance and determine the root cause of electrical outages.
To open and interpret these files properly, users typically need AcSELerator QuickSet or SEL SYNCHROWAVE Event software. The main disadvantage of the .CEV format is its highly proprietary and compressed nature. It is completely unreadable by standard text editors, spreadsheets, or web browsers. If an engineer needs to share fault data with a client or a third-party analyst who lacks a paid SEL software license, the raw .CEV file is essentially useless.
Because this is a closed, proprietary format, standard online converters fail to process it. The encoding is kept secret by the manufacturer. Consequently, users frequently need to convert these reports into PDF for easy visual sharing, CSV for raw data analysis in Microsoft Excel, or .COMTRADE (the IEEE standard format for transient data exchange). Because .CEV files are notoriously difficult to decode outside of their native ecosystem, full conversion often requires the original software to properly export the data. However, our analysis tools can still inspect the file structure, extract readable metadata, and determine if an underlying format is available for conversion.
Convert.Guru analyzes your CEV file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert CEV file to MP4, AVI, MOV, WMV, FLV, WEBM, MKV, M4V, 3GP, OGV, ASF or RM, you can use AcSELerator QuickSet or similar software from the "Electrical Relay Event Report" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MTS, MOV, RMVB, DIVX, RM, H264, TS, WMV, VOB, MP4, XVID or AVI files to CEV, try AcSELerator QuickSet or another comparable tool in the "Electrical Relay Event Report" category.
The CEV Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CEV converter.
