GIFV is not a traditional file format; it is a platform-specific wrapper developed by Imgur to modernize the animated GIF. Imgur's solution was to silently convert uploaded GIFs into high-efficiency video formats - typically MP4 (H.264) or WEBP - and serve them inside an HTML5 container that loops and autoplays. Consequently, a file ending in .gifv is often just an MP4 video with a misleading extension, or an HTML page snippet pointing to that video.

If you attempt to download a .gifv directly, you might end up with a file that Adobe Photoshop refuses to open, or a generic HTML document that does nothing when clicked.
