About RWT files
The .RWT extension is primarily associated with ReadWriteThink, an educational platform providing interactive tools for students, such as the Timeline Creator, Printing Press, and Essay Map. These files serve as "save states" for works-in-progress, allowing students to store their data locally and resume editing later by re-uploading the file to the web interface.
Because .RWT files are essentially containers for raw project data (often formatted as XML or JSON, sometimes compressed with zlib), they are not designed to be opened directly by standard desktop software like Microsoft Word or Adobe Reader. A common frustration for students and teachers is attempting to "open" these files to view the finished timeline or essay, only to find a blank screen or garbled code. The file does not contain the visual rendering of the project - only the text inputs and coordinate data.
To view the content as intended, the file must be loaded back into the specific ReadWriteThink Interactive tool that created it. For submission, sharing, or archiving, the best approach is to load the file into the tool and export the final result to PDF or a raster image format like JPG. If the original tool is discontinued or inaccessible, converting the internal structure to XML or TXT may allow you to at least recover the written content.
Convert.Guru analyzes your RWT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted RVT, HS3, HS2 and RWTL files.
The RWT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our RWT converter.
