About GDOC files
The .GDOC file is a shortcut created by the Google Drive desktop application. It acts as a pointer to a document stored online in Google Docs. Under the hood, it is simply a small JSON-formatted text file containing a web address and a document ID. It does not contain the actual text, images, or formatting of your document.
Because it is a shortcut, the .GDOC format is notoriously frustrating for users who do not understand how cloud syncing works. If you copy a .GDOC file to a USB drive or attach it to an email, the recipient gets a useless 1KB text file instead of the real document. Furthermore, opening the file requires an active internet connection, a Google account, and specific sharing permissions set by the file owner. If the original file is deleted from the cloud, the .GDOC file becomes permanently broken.
To share, edit, or archive your work reliably, you must convert the document to an independent format. For editing offline in Microsoft Word, convert to DOCX. For sharing a fixed layout that anyone can view, convert to PDF. For long-term archiving, use .PDF/A or ODT.
Convert.Guru analyzes your GDOC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert GDOC file to DOCX, DOC, TXT, RTF, ODT, PAGES, TEX, LATEX, MD, MARKDOWN, LOG or NFO, you can use Google Drive or similar software from the "Cloud Document Shortcut" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert PDF, DOC, ASC, TODO, NFO, MEMO, README, DOCX, JPG, TXT, NOTE or RTF files to GDOC, try Google Drive or another comparable tool in the "Cloud Document Shortcut" category.
The GDOC Converter Story
