To convert other file formats to the "Scientific & Network Data" file type, you need software like Gephi or a similar tool.

About GDF files

The .GDF file extension generally refers to one of two highly technical formats: a General Data Format file for storing biomedical signals (such as EEG or ECG recordings), or a Graph Data Format file used to define network nodes and edges. Network researchers primarily use Gephi or GUESS to handle the graph variants, while medical researchers rely on toolboxes like Biosig for the biomedical variants. Other less common uses include ICONICS GraphWorX32 display files, ICGEM gravity field grids, and well log data in GeoGraphix.

The primary disadvantage of the .GDF format is severe extension collision. Because it serves at least ten completely different software domains, operating systems constantly fail to assign the correct default program. Furthermore, the biomedical variant is a specialized binary format that is completely inaccessible without niche scientific software. While the graph variant is text-based, it is strictly formatted and prone to syntax errors if edited manually. Neither variant is supported by web browsers or standard office software.

To make your data usable and accessible, you must convert it. For statistical analysis in R or Excel, convert your data to CSV or JSON. For modern network visualization, convert graph files to GEXF or GraphML. For human-readable reporting and archiving, use PDF/A.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GDF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted GFD4, GFD, ZIP, JPG, JPEG, QDF, DOCX, GDB, XLSX, PDF, OBJ, STP and P7M files.

FAQ

If you want to convert GDF file to GEOJSON, CSV, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML, INI, CFG, CONF, DAT or DB, you can use Gephi or similar software from the "Biomedical & Graph Data Storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

To convert DBF, XML, SQLITE, XLSX, SQL, TSV, ACCDB, YAML, MDB, CSV, ODS or JSON files to GDF, try Gephi or another comparable tool in the "Biomedical & Graph Data Storage" category.

The GDF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GDF converter.
