An .FXB file is a standard VST 2.x Bank file used to store a complete collection of presets (patches) for virtual instruments and audio effects. Unlike a single FXP preset, an FXB typically holds a fixed bank of 128 sounds, acting as a bulk storage container for plugin settings. While established by Steinberg, this format is now considered a legacy standard as the industry shifts toward VST3 and proprietary database-driven preset managers.
The primary difficulty for users is the "all-or-nothing" nature of the format; you often cannot browse or preview individual sounds without loading the entire bank into a compatible host like Cubase or FL Studio. Furthermore, as DAWs increasingly drop support for the older VST2 specification, accessing these archives becomes difficult without bridging software.
For modern workflows, the ideal conversion strategy involves extracting the bank into individual FXP files for easier sorting and tagging. If you are archiving vintage synthesizer sounds for use in samplers, converting the audio output to WAV or FLAC is the only way to preserve the sound without relying on the original plugin code.
