About FW4 files
An .FW4 file generally belongs to one of two legacy applications. Primarily, it is an Ashton-Tate Framework IV document. Framework IV was a popular integrated DOS office suite from the late 1980s that combined word processing, spreadsheets, and database management into a single file structure. Alternatively, an .FW4 file can be a document created with Adobe FrameMaker 4, a page layout and technical authoring tool originally developed by Frame Technology. Because these formats are decades old, modern operating systems cannot natively open them. For Ashton-Tate files, you would historically need a DOS emulator like DOSBox running the original Framework software. For FrameMaker documents, older versions of Adobe FrameMaker might import the legacy format, but support has largely been dropped. The main disadvantage of the .FW4 format is its extreme obsolescence. It is a closed, proprietary, binary format. You cannot open it with Microsoft Word, Excel, or modern web browsers. Finding working copies of the original software is difficult, and running them requires setting up virtual machines, which is highly impractical for everyday users just trying to recover old text or a spreadsheet. If the goal is to recover readable information, the best conversion targets are TXT (for text content) or CSV (for spreadsheet data). If the layout somehow survives extraction, converting to PDF is ideal, though most formatting will likely be lost. Due to the proprietary encoding used by Ashton-Tate and early FrameMaker, standard online converters usually fail to process .FW4 files entirely. The data is tightly bound to the original software engine. However, you can drag and drop your .FW4 file into convert.guru. We will identify the file format, inspect the binary file, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible allowing you to salvage data without needing a 30-year-old floppy disk.

The FW4 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FW4 converter.
