About FMZ files
The .fmz file is the native project format for AutoDesSys form•Z, a powerful 3D modeling application used in architecture, fabrication, and product design. These files store the complete project state, including hybrid solid/surface geometry, proprietary NURBS data, scene lighting, and animation tracks. While .fmz files are technically robust, they are a significant "walled garden" for users; they are strictly proprietary and cannot be opened directly by industry-standard tools like Blender, SketchUp, or Autodesk Revit. This creates major friction for collaboration, as sending a .fmz file to a client or contractor usually results in them being unable to view it. To resolve this, the file must be opened in form•Z and exported to an interchangeable format. For 3D printing, converting to STL is the standard. For visualization and rendering in other engines, OBJ or DAE (Collada) are best for preserving geometry. For CAD documentation, DWG or DXF are required to maintain accurate line work.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FMZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FMZ file to DWG, DXF, DGN, RVT, RFA, SKP, 3DM, STEP, IGES, SAT, X_T or X_B, you can use form•Z or similar software from the "3D Modeling Project" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert SLDASM, DGN, PRT, IAM, X_B, CATPRODUCT, SLDPRT, RVT, ASM, DWG, CATPART or DXF files to FMZ, try form•Z or another comparable tool in the "3D Modeling Project" category.
The FMZ Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FMZ converter.
