The .FTM extension is a "container" used by two completely different communities, creating significant confusion. Most commonly, it is a proprietary database file created by Family Tree Maker, currently developed by Software MacKiev (formerly by Ancestry). These files store your entire genealogy research, including names, dates, relationships, and media links. The major friction point here is proprietary lock-in: an .FTM file cannot be opened by web browsers, other genealogy software, or even older versions of Family Tree Maker without conversion. The second frequent use is as a project module for FamiTracker, a free tool used to create 8-bit music for the Nintendo Entertainment System (NES). Less commonly, an .FTM file might be an ECU tuning map for FuelTech engine management systems or a data document from Fathom.
