About ABR files
An .ABR file contains custom brush presets for Adobe Photoshop. It stores the fundamental shape of a brush tip alongside complex dynamic settings like texture, scattering, opacity, flow, and stylus pressure response. Digital artists, retouchers, and graphic designers use these files to paint textures, stamp watermarks, and seamlessly mask image layers.
These files are primarily managed and applied using Adobe Photoshop. While alternative image editors like GIMP or Affinity Photo can import basic .ABR files, they often fail to translate the advanced brush dynamics, leaving you with only the static, flat shape of the brush tip.
The main disadvantage of the .ABR format is severe proprietary lock-in. You cannot natively preview the contents of an .ABR file in Windows File Explorer or macOS Finder. If you do not pay for a costly Photoshop subscription, viewing what is inside a downloaded brush pack is nearly impossible. Additionally, older versions of Photoshop frequently fail to read .ABR files exported from newer releases due to underlying updates in the Adobe brush engine.
To view the shapes stored inside a brush pack without Adobe software, convert the .ABR to standard raster image formats. For web use or compositing in other tools, convert to PNG to extract the brush tips while keeping their transparent alpha channels. For quick visual archiving of your brush library, convert to JPG. If the brush shape is solid and needs scaling, convert it to SVG for use in Adobe Illustrator. Drag and drop your .ABR file here to analyze and convert it into viewable images - free, online, and without installing software.

The ABR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ABR converter.
