About FDT files
The .FDT extension serves three distinct ecosystems, creating significant confusion for users trying to open them. Most commonly, it represents Field Data within an Apache Lucene search index. These are binary files used to store the stored fields of documents during indexing. Because they are optimized for machine retrieval rather than human readability, they cannot be simply opened in a text editor; attempting to do so results in gibberish. Users looking to access this data typically need to export the index content to JSON, XML, or CSV using developer tools like Luke.
Alternatively, in industrial settings, .FDT files are data logs generated by Fuji Electric paperless recorders. These files contain critical temperature or process measurement trends but are locked in a proprietary binary structure. Engineers often need to convert these logs to CSV or Excel (.XLSX) for analysis in spreadsheet software, requiring the manufacturer's specific data loader utilities. Finally, legacy users of Final Draft (versions 5-7) may encounter .FDT script templates. These outdated files are incompatible with modern workflows and should be converted to the modern FDX XML format or PDF for archiving and sharing.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FDT file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted FDT2, FDF, FODT, PDF, CFE, DIRECTORYSTOREFILE, SEGMENTS_1 and DTS files.
The FDT Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FDT converter.
