About FODT files

A .FODT file is a Flat OpenDocument Text document. Unlike a standard ODT file, which operates as a zipped archive containing XML data and separate media folders, an .FODT file stores the entire document - text, styling, and even embedded images - as one single, uncompressed XML file. This format is heavily utilized by developers for automated document generation and version control tracking (like Git) because pure text files are much easier to parse and compare line-by-line. To open these files natively, you must use open-source office suites like LibreOffice Writer or Apache OpenOffice. Because it lacks ZIP compression, file sizes grow massively if the document contains images. These images are encoded directly into the XML as Base64 text, bloating the media file size by roughly 33%. Furthermore, mobile devices, web browsers, and proprietary software like Microsoft Word often fail to read or properly render flat ODF files. To bypass these limits, you must convert the file.
