Convert a file to FDD
To convert other file formats to the "Floppy Disk Emulator Image" file type, you need software like Parallels Desktop or a similar tool.
About FDD files
A .FDD file is most commonly a Virtual Floppy Disk Image used by emulators like Anex86 PC-98 Emulator and Parallels Desktop to simulate a physical floppy drive. Alternatively, it serves as a proprietary electronic form document created by FormDocs. It is also occasionally found as a collaboration cache file in Autodesk Revit or a word processing document in WPCubed WPTools.
The .FDD format presents distinct real-world disadvantages depending on its origin. As a virtual floppy disk, it is an obsolete format severely limited by a tiny storage capacity (usually 1.2MB or 1.44MB). Modern operating systems do not natively mount these images, meaning you must rely on specialized legacy software or archive tools. As a FormDocs document, it is a closed, proprietary format requiring a paid license or a specific viewer to open, edit, or print. Users generally need to extract files from the disk image or convert the forms into a standard PDF to share them with clients.
Standard online converters routinely fail to process .FDD files due to these conflicting uses. Converting a raw disk image into a document is impossible; it requires extraction. Conversely, FormDocs forms contain proprietary data structures that only the original software can properly read or export.
For disk images, the best conversion targets are IMG or ISO for better emulator compatibility, though extracting the contents directly is usually preferred. For forms, a PDF is the optimal target. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your FDD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert FDD file to HDI, ISO, IMG, DMG, VHD, VMDK, VDI, HDD, QCOW, QCOW2, RAW or VBOX, you can use Parallels Desktop or similar software from the "Virtual Floppy Disk Image" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert VFD, DMG, OVA, IMA, VBOX, ADF, PVS, VHD, OVF, ISO, DSK or IMG files to FDD, try Parallels Desktop or another comparable tool in the "Virtual Floppy Disk Image" category.
The FDD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FDD converter.
