About FFD files
The .FFD extension is a polysemous 'wildcard' container used by widely different software, creating significant confusion for users. Most commonly, you are dealing with one of three distinct formats. First, in legacy office environments, it represents a FormTool Filled Data file - a digital form completed in older versions of FormTool. These proprietary files often cannot be opened by modern web browsers or PDF readers, locking away data unless you have the original software installed. Second, for gamers, .FFD serves as a character save file for titles like WildTangent's FATE, Might and Magic, and potentially modded versions of Diablo. These are binary blobs storing inventory and stats; users often try to convert them to JSON or text for editing, but they are frequently encrypted or require specific hex editors. Finally, in enterprise IT, an .FFD is a Flat File Descriptor used by integration platforms like Liaison (now OpenText) to map complex legacy text data to modern XML schemas. Because these files are strictly defined by their parent software, there is no universal viewer. Your best conversion path depends entirely on the origin: convert FormTool files to PDF for archiving, parse Game Saves with hex editors for modification, or use integration middleware to transform Descriptor files into XSD or JSON.

The FFD Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FFD converter.
