The main disadvantage of the .FCPXML format is that it relies heavily on the specific architecture of Apple's ecosystem. It is proprietary and requires third-party translation apps to be opened in competing software like Adobe Premiere Pro. Furthermore, users often mistakenly believe an .FCPXML file contains video. It does not. It is simply a small text file pointing to external media files. If you share this file without the accompanying video assets, the receiving editor will only see "Media Offline" errors.
Converting an .FCPXML file is usually done to migrate timelines across different software platforms. The best target formats are standard XML, EDL (Edit Decision List), or AAF (Advanced Authoring Format).
