The .FBM file extension serves two distinctly different purposes. Primarily, it is a Ship Design Model created by marine CAD software such as DELFTship and its predecessor, FREE!ship. These files contain complex NURBS (Non-Uniform Rational B-Splines) surface data to accurately represent boat hulls and hydrostatic parameters. Alternatively, in the 3D animation world, .FBM acts as an FBX Embedded Media file or folder. When you export an FBX file from tools like Autodesk Maya or Blender, the software extracts embedded textures (like PNG or JPG) into an .FBM directory.
The main disadvantage of .FBM hull models is their extreme proprietary lock-in. You cannot open them without specialized, often expensive marine engineering software. If you share an .FBM hull design with a client, they simply will not be able to view it natively. Similarly, FBX embedded media files can be highly frustrating - they randomly clutter project directories, and their internal textures are locked behind 3D software dependencies.
To share marine designs practically, you should convert the 3D mesh to standard formats. For 3D printing, convert to STL. For editing in general 3D software, convert to OBJ. If you need to extract image textures from an FBX media block, convert it directly to PNG or JPG.
