About FBM files

The .fbm extension primarily identifies a Ship Hull Design project created by DELFTship or its open-source predecessor, FREE!ship. These files store complex 3D subdivision surfaces, hydrostatic calculations, and resistance data specific to marine architecture. A common limitation for users is the lack of interoperability; a raw .fbm file cannot be opened in standard CAD tools like AutoCAD or Blender without prior conversion. Furthermore, older FREE!ship files may experience data loss when opened in newer versions of DELFTship due to proprietary format shifts.

In a completely different context (approx. 12% of cases), .fbm refers to an FBX Embedded Media directory. When 3D software (like Unity or Maya) imports an FBX file with embedded textures, it often extracts the images (usually PNG or JPG) into a folder suffixing the filename with .fbm. Users often mistake this folder for a single file.

The FBM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our FBM converter.
