The .esg file extension is primarily used for X-ray diffraction data generated by GNR APD2000 analytical instruments. These files store raw scientific measurement data used in crystallography and materials science. A secondary use for the .esg extension is for game save files in Endless Space 2, a popular 4X strategy game developed by Amplitude Studios, and occasionally in the classic game Enigmo by Pangea Software.
The main disadvantage of the scientific .esg format is that it is highly proprietary. You cannot easily open it without the expensive, specialized GNR APD2000 software. Sharing these files with colleagues who use equipment from different manufacturers is difficult because standard web browsers and text editors cannot read the raw binary data. Users often need to convert these files to standard plaintext formats like TXT, CSV, or standard crystallographic interchange formats like CIF to analyze the data in third-party software.
For the Endless Space 2 save files, the data is actually compressed using standard GZIP. While you cannot typically convert a game save to another format without breaking the game, you can extract the underlying data to modify player stats or fix corrupted saves.
Converting .esg files is challenging because standard online converters fail to parse the closed binary structures of scientific equipment. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data.
