About ERG files

The .ERG file extension is most famously associated with the RacerMate CompuTrainer, the pioneer of indoor cycling performance hardware. These files are simple text scripts that define a workout by prescribing specific wattage targets over time (e.g., "Hold 250 Watts for 5 minutes").

While the CompuTrainer hardware is now legacy technology, the .ERG format remains a standard for storing absolute-power workouts. However, using them today presents a major problem: Absolute Wattage Lock-in. Unlike modern MRC files which scale workouts to your fitness level (percentage of FTP), an .ERG file demands a fixed power output. If you are stronger or weaker than when the file was created, the workout will be the wrong intensity. Furthermore, modern platforms like Zwift and TrainerRoad prefer their own XML-based formats (DOCX style structures) or binary FIT files for seamless smart trainer control.

To use these classic profiles on modern hardware (like Wahoo KICKR or Tacx Neo), users typically convert them to MRC (to add FTP scaling), .ZWO (for Zwift import), or FIT (for Garmin head units).

Note: In corporate IT environments, an .ERG file may alternatively be a configuration backup from Cisco Prime Infrastructure or an encrypted course record from US Navy e-Learning. These are often just renamed RAR archives.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ERG file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ZWO, MRC, FIT, GZ, TCX, TXT, PDF, QZTP, IMS, TSD, EV, J and CAL files.

The ERG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ERG converter.
