The .EPSI file is an Encapsulated PostScript Interchange format, a legacy variation of the standard EPS vector graphic designed by Adobe. Its defining feature is that it is purely text-based (ASCII); unlike standard EPS files that embed binary previews (like TIFF or PICT) which often broke on older UNIX systems, .EPSI files embed their preview image as a block of hexadecimal text comments. This ensures the file can be transferred across different operating systems - such as from a Linux mainframe to a Windows PC - without corruption.
While this format solved compatibility issues in the 1990s, it presents significant friction today. Because the preview data is encoded as text, .EPSI files are inefficiently large compared to modern binary formats. Furthermore, the embedded preview is often a low-resolution monochrome bitmap that looks jagged on modern high-DPI displays. Most standard image viewers and web browsers cannot display .EPSI files at all.
